Why is the IEEE Important?

For me,
  • IEEE has provided me with critical access to technical information at affordable prices.  I read IEEE Transactions from many Societies on the train to and from work for a decade.  They clutter my family room and office and now my home server.
  • Working with other IEEE volunteers created relationships that grew into decades-long friendships crossing international boundaries.
  • IEEE is making the world better by creating and disseminating information that is critical to making the world a better place to live.
  • Attending conferences and meetings has been a great way to see the world.
  • IEEE advancement and awards provide visible career progression.
  • Serving on the AdCom, running a Conference, and serving as VP Finance have helped me develop and test corporate-level management experience like balance sheets and long range planning.
Things we can do more of
  • Engineering focused on problems that change chronic problems in our world.  Check out the IEEE competition here.
  • Helping educate the next generation on the fun of engineering.  Check out the IEEE-sponsored Design Squad program on PBS here.
  • Teach the next generation about trade-offs and good decision making in complex situations.
  • Engineers and scientists need to act as visible, positive role models to counter-balance often negative and irrational influences of popular cultural.
